Coinciding with Love Parks Week, this year’s Camberwell Arts Festival takes art out of the gallery and into the many green spaces of SE5. Camberwell Green itself forms the starting point for an exhibition that spills out onto local parks, pavements, shops and galleries to form a green art trail throughout Camberwell.
Green is a colour generally associated with the natural environment – and so has positive associations, as seen in Kanako Sasaki’s idyllic Wanderlust photographs in Cristallo Clothes Shop. It can also have more sinister overtones, depicted through the neon greens of Rik Pinkcombe’s night photographs and Robin Tarbet’s use of CCTV cameras in House Gallery.
Camberwell Green offers a chance to reconnect with both the natural and the unnatural within the city. Harald Smykla painstakingly cuts a botanical drawing into the unmown grass on Camberwell Green, while Farah Bajull’s Tail pieces hang mysteriously overhead.
Tanya Axford uses green paint charts to create a landscape in Sod’s Lawn, while Sue Cohen workswith young people from Y.E.S.S. to create a bizarre series of plant-human hybrids.
Errol Francis’ beautiful portraits, set amongst ‘immigrant’ plant species, make us relook at our systems of classification and control. Robert Luzar’s work, installed on park noticeboards throughout Camberwell , looks at how information gets disseminated and censored in public spaces.
Enjoy Johannes Phokela’s Hermit over a pint in the Hermit’s Cave and visit Joe Balfour’s contemporary bandstand outside Camberwell College of Arts. Experience Camberwell Green in a new light during Phoebe Davies and Holly Blakey’s impromptu, guerrilla performance, Light Interventions, at 11pm on Saturday 21 June.
Join some of the participating artists during the Festival as Iris Garrelfs leads a sound walk through the green spaces of Camberwell on Sunday 15 June at 4pm and Rachel Gomme creates a green path through Camberwell in Undergrowth on Sunday 22 June at 3pm. Join Greville Quinn to create a balloon zoo in Ruskin Park as part of the Friends of Ruskin Park’s Midsummer Fete on Saturday 21 June, from 2–5pm.
Camberwell Green opens with Paint the Whole Town Green and concludes with a memorable closing party on Camberwell Green, as Marq Kearey and Sarah Sparkes curate Chutney II – The Rot Sets In!
Paint the Whole Town Green!
Help us to paint the town green. From painting-by-numbers to a modern take on the park railing painting phenomenom, we are running a series of art workshop for all age groups. Working with artists participating in the Festival programme, we invite you to help us create a series of group artworks that will be exhibited on Camberwell Green throughout the Festival.
This event is sponsored by Cowling and Wilcox.
