Background to Camberwell Arts and overview of role of Director
Camberwell Arts is an independent arts organisation that focuses on representing, developing and promoting the diverse arts and cultural features of Camberwell. It undertakes a variety of educational workshops as Camberwell Arts: workshop and is involved in developing participatory and socially engaged art-based practice with local estates, community organisations and schools, and building collaborative networks with other local agencies.

Camberwell Arts produces events and projects within the annual Camberwell Arts Festival (formerly ‘Camberwell Artsweek’, with 2007 being the 13th Festival) and facilitates the participation of artists and arts organisations. Over recent years the Festival has grown to include an innovative live art programme, open studios, exhibitions, commissioned projects, walks & talks, and large-scale open-air events. Camberwell Arts Festival is a partnership between local artists and arts organisations and is initiated by Camberwell Arts, Camberwell College of Arts and South London Gallery.

We are seeking an energetic and creative Director who has the vision and commitment to take the organisation forwards in a period of exciting transition. The Director’s immediate task will be to programme and commission events for Camberwell Arts Festival 2008, in partnership with other local organisations, including Camberwell College of Arts and South London Gallery. Fundraising is a key part of the role, in addition to building strategic partnerships locally and ensuring that the Festival is representative of and inclusive of all communities in Camberwell.

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated self-starter with a creative vision for Camberwell who, beyond the immediate task of managing 2008’s Festival, will be driven by the challenge of strategically developing and expanding the organisation.
