Shopped
Throughout Camberwell, SE5, Free
Chila Burman, Nicky Hodge, Alex Hulme & Rebecca Lucraft, Miranda Jankowski & Rebecca Parkinson, Yan Li, Esther Rumble, Paul Schneider, Duncan Wood
Brave shopkeepers in Camberwell have let artists run riot in their shop, allowing their windows to double up as galleries during this year’s Camberwell Arts Festival. Opticians and newsagents are just some of the local shops that have been given the shop treatment by emerging and established artists.
All have created work in response to their host shop, from Chila Burman’s Candy Pop and Juicy Lucy in the Camberwell Superstore to Nicky Hodges’ paintings within paintings, displayed inside art suppliers Cowling and Wilcox.
Revitalise your senses with Yan Li’s installation in the Chinese Medicine Shop on Camberwell Road or take in some pavement cinema through the window of S&S Electronics, where Jade Cole has curated Reflections of Choice, a group video exhibition. See Paul Schneider’s text-based work in Rat Records.
In Rodney’s Opticians, Alex Hulme and Rebecca Lucraft use a prism of lenses to look at consciousness as the notion of the inner-self projected onto the exterior world. Meanwhile, Esther Rumble revisits old haunts, creating new work in the barbers where she used to get her head shaved as a student at Camberwell College.
Miranda Jankowski and Rebecca Parkinson go on a shopping expedition in Camberwell: listen in on their conversation by logging onto the Cambewell Arts web-site (www.camberwellarts.org.uk/festival) or via the walky talkies they have distributed throughout Camberwell shops.
Responding to a commission by Kamera Obscura, Duncan Wood draws inspiration from the Georgian architecture and stylish shop-front installations of Clarendon Terrace.

Camberwell Arts and the Clarendon Terrace Society are looking for local artists to take part in Shopped! We will be holding a drawing event to document Clarendon Terrace – a parade of shops on Camberwell New Road, the longest Georgian Road in England. The event will be held on Saturday 21st June at 2pm and we are looking for a range of styles and approaches. The event will be filmed and posted on the Camberwell Arts web-site and the SE5 Forum.
