Call to individuals

Camberwell Arts is looking for artists who are interested in participating in this year’s Festival.  We are looking for work that does not rely on gallery or theatre venues and can take place in alternative spaces throughout Camberwell, including pavements, parks, bus shelters, shops and other sites within the SE5 urban environment.  For those unfamiliar with the local area, it is not a prerequisite to select your ideal exhibition/performance site as we can work with you to find a suitable location.

We are particularly looking for work that will fit into the following strands of the programme:

- Camberwell Arts Pub Crawl
The pub has remained a pillar of British social life over the years and Camberwell Arts are looking to commission artists who are interested in using the traditional staples of pub life to explore ideas around art and life.  From Karaoke nights to pub quizzes, we are looking to commission live/performance artists who are interested in exploring the role of the pub in British cultural life.   We are also looking to commission visual artists producing work in response to pub names in Camberwell.

The Camberwell Arts Pub Crawl will take the form of a pub crawl through some of Camberwell’s most popular pubs, with scheduled stops to view performances and artwork.  It will open the Camberwell Arts Festival on the evening of Saturday 14th June.  A small fee of £250 per artist is available for artists selected to participate in this strand.

- Camberwell Green
Camberwell Green is a visual arts project that will look at the colour green – both the colour of the natural environment and the myriad hues of the urban environment.  It will be underlined by a critical concern with how we see and respond to colour in an advanced technological age and will use colour as a way of encouraging local residents and visitors to look at the surfaces of the modern city and their local environment.

We are looking to commission work that can be installed/performed on Camberwell Green and other green spaces throughout Camberwell, including gardens and local estates, to form a green art trail through Camberwell. A small fee of £250 per artist is available for artists selected to participate in this strand.

- Camberwell Shop Fronts
We are looking for artists who are interested in working with local shop owners to create alternative window dressings during the Festival.  The work will need to link in some way with the shop’s produce whilst also operating as an independent art installation.

The deadline for submissions is 11th April 2008.  Please send information about your proposed work, an artist’s statement, images of previous works(or links to images) and contact details to the addresses given below.
