Camberwell Arts Festival 2012
A call to artists
INLAND OFF-SHORE
As part of his year’s Camberwell Arts Festival, INLAND will create a temporary structure - a mise en abyme - within the gallery to facilitate a productive space for event based exhibits. INLAND Off-Shore takes as its departuret the notion of the ISLAND as a microcosm whereby ideas can be communicated and developed, isolation breeding creation within the physicality of the space.
During the 3 days we hope to encourage an open and discursive environment which simultaneously evolves in its installation as an autonomous work.
This series of events will take place between 17th & 21st June. If you have a use for the space please email us at contact@inlandstudios.co.uk

CAMBERWELL: UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL
This year’s Camberwell Arts Festival takes Camberwell herself as our muse, inviting artists to get up close and personal to celebrate the SE5 area in its many guises. From local legend, lore and outlaws to the people and places that define Camberwell as it is here and now, we are looking for work across a range of media that holds up a spotlight to this unique corner of South London.
We are particularly interested in work that will create a strong visual impression and can be exhibited or performed in public and alternative spaces throughout Camberwell, such as pubs, parks, pavements, bus shelters, shops, cafes etc. For those unfamiliar with the local area, it is not a prerequisite to select your ideal exhibition/performance site as we can work with you to find a suitable location.
The deadline for submissions is Monday 23rd April 2012. Please send information about your proposed work, an artist’s statement, images of previous works (or links to images) and contact details to kellyoreilly@london.com
As part of Up Close and Personal, we are looking for artists to take part in the following two exhibitions:
CAMBERWELL OPEN: LUCKY DIP
An open entry exhibition that takes place out in the open! Through an online lucky dip process, 10 shortlisted artists will be randomly allocated a street, park or public building in Camberwell. They will receive a budget of £100 to create an artwork specifically for that location in order to compete for the 2nd Camberwell Open Prize.
Designed as a meditation on the nature of art and creativity, Lucky Dip also aims to reflect the random allocation of cultural resources in our current climate of cultural cuts. A panel of artists, critics, curators and residents will select the winning entry, to be announced on the opening day of the Festival. The winner will receive a prize of £1,000.
PUB CRAWL
Pub Crawl is a group exhibition celebrating some of Camberwell’s best-loved pubs. From the Bear to the Tiger, the Hermit’s Cave to the Crooked Well, we are looking to commission new work that responds directly to the environment and name of each participating pub.
As a unique twist on the commissioning process (and as a way of involving pub regulars in the process), Camberwell Arts will place a collection box in each of the participating pubs for the 6 weeks leading up to the Festival. The amount collected by each pub will be the entire commissioning budget for the artist allocated to that pub, regardless of whether £200 has been raised or £2!
To apply for the Camberwell Open or Pub Crawl please send an artist’s statement, images of previous works (or links to images) and contact details to kellyoreilly@london.com - indicating which project you are applying for. If you have a preference for working with a particular pub as part of Pub Crawl, please indicate this on your application. The deadline for submissions is Monday 30th April 2012.
The 2012 Camberwell Arts Festival will take place from Saturday 16th – Sunday 24th June. The Festival is a partnership between artists, residents, traders, community groups and organisations within SE5. It is co-ordinated by Camberwell Arts.
