Returning to the South London Gallery for the fifth year, Bloomberg New Contemporaries is a group show of emerging and early career artists. The 2022 exhibition features 47 of the UK’s most exciting artists from art schools and alternative peer-to-peer learning programmes.

The artists were selected through an open submission by internationally renowned artists James Richards, Veronica Ryan and Zadie Xa. The artists draw from personal and collective experiences. In particular, the work explores memory, identity and spirituality.

The New Contemporaries 2022 Online Platform includes new writing about the artists’ work. The writers are selected through the New Contemporaries Writing Commissions opportunity.

It acts as a sort of state-of-play for young art in this country, a way to take the pulse of creativity in the UK. And this year’s showing is as good as ever. There’s a bunch of painting, loads of installation, plenty of cleverness and oodles of ideas.

New Contemporaries was established in 1949 to give visibility and recognition to an incredible breadth and depth of emerging talent. It also provides other vital development opportunities that enable artists’ practices to become more sustainable long-term.
